CIN — the lid

INGREDIENTSA layer of warm air that holds storms down — until something breaks through.

CINConvective INhibition — is CAPE's opposite number. Where CAPE measures the energy pushing a warm bubble up, CIN measures the energy barrier holding it down: usually a thin layer of warm air a kilometre or two above the ground, sitting on the atmosphere like a lid on a pot.

The lid is why some of the scariest storm days look calm for hours. Under a lid, the sun keeps heating the ground and moisture keeps pooling — the pot keeps filling with CAPE while nothing is allowed to rise. Then, late in the afternoon, something breaks the seal: the ground gets hot enough, a front arrives, or air is forced up a hill. Everything that was held back goes up at once, and the first storm of the day is violent minutes after it forms.

Forecasters respect lid days more than lid-free ones. Without a lid, many small storms fire early and share the fuel. Under a lid, one or two storms get the whole tank.

CIN is measured in J/kg like CAPE, but works against the updraft:

  • 0–25 J/kg — no real lid; storms fire easily.
  • 25–100 J/kg — a modest lid; needs decent heating or a trigger.
  • over 100 J/kg — a strong cap. Storms are unlikely unless something powerful breaks it — and if it breaks, watch out.

In the Tornado Outlook, CIN lives inside the Spark meter: a big CIN with no trigger in sight means the ingredients may exist on paper while the sky stays stubbornly blue.
