Thunderstorm
EVENTSThe atmosphere's engine for moving heat — a life in three acts.
A thunderstorm is what happens when the atmosphere corrects an imbalance: too much warm, moist air trapped near the ground, too much cold air aloft. The storm is simply the elevator that moves the heat upstairs — with sound effects.

- Growth. A bubble of warm air breaks through (the spark) and rises, condensing into a towering cumulus. Everything moves upward; there's no rain yet — the updraft is strong enough to hold the droplets aloft.
- Maturity. The cloud tops out — often at 10–12 km, where it flattens into the classic anvil shape against the stratosphere. Rain and hail finally fall, dragging cold air down with them: now an updraft and a downdraft run side by side. This is the violent act — heaviest rain, lightning, gusts, hail.
- Collapse. The cold downdraft spreads along the ground and cuts off the storm's own warm inflow. The updraft dies; the rain fades; only the orphaned anvil drifts on. An ordinary cell completes all three acts in 30–60 minutes.
>Why some storms are worse
The difference between a rumble and a disaster is organization. Single cells die young. Storms in a line (a squall line) hand fuel to each other and last all evening. And a storm with a rotating updraft — a supercell — escapes the third act almost entirely. What decides the storm's career is the wind shear around it, which is exactly what the outlook's Engine meter reads.
The rule of thumb worth teaching: when thunder roars, go indoors — if you can hear it, the storm's lightning can reach you.
